STUDIO The unrealised narratives in James Merrigan’s large-scale text paintings wallow in ecstasy and anxiety. They are the self-conscious notes from an unfinished novel; a dream cast with characters that cast shadows over their beginnings and endings. Like (the writer of sentences) Don DeLillo, who prioritises a love of sentences over meaning, Merrigan starts with a feeling originating from an imagined or real experience, and then collapses everything down to a sentence or paragraph. Both author and auteur, Merrigan distances himself from the sensations and meanings that lie behind, between and beneath his forlorn sentences by rewriting them in the third person. The ‘Shes’ and ‘Hes’ of his textual landscapes have found the freedom to think and feel without irony, while Merrigan stands back to relive and enjoy them as both artist and observer, with us. The first solo presentation of this work will take place in 2020.

On the spot thoughts and feelings are intermixed with more carefully pronounced thoughts and feelings that come much later. Ultimately, dub sessions questions the value of that most fluent and fluid and sometimes deceptive editor, Time.

Students will learn the craft of writing, editing and research, and develop their imaginations and gain personal insights through a deep and meaningful exploration of art, both historical and contemporary.
